Best Actor: Trevor St. John

REVIEWS

Hands down, The Art Of Getting Over It shows Trevor St. John at his best. Taking a character through a fully executed emotional arc in 20 minutes is no easy task, but he made the challenge look effortless, as did the rest of the cast. St. John’s subtle humor as Cameron, contrasted with the character’s deep-set fit of pique, tops the most noteworthy moments, but Mark St. John’s haunting performance as Cameron’s father, Paul, takes the cake, as well. The only thing about this film worthy of complaint is that it’s not a full-length feature — though that’s not to say that director Dan Gauthier hasn’t structured it to feel like one!

"This short twenty-three minute film is an absolute must-see. Not only is 'The Art of Getting Over It' an elegantly polished masterpiece, with top notch performances all around coupled with superb camerawork and editing, it is also acutely aware of how anger, money and sex shape desire and resentment. The film is a journey into the distinctions between presenting a facade to the world, outright pretense and the more radical practice of reinventing oneself. It is into these registers that Trevor St. John and Graham Sharman III weave the most intriguing and ironic undertones.

Trevor St. John and Graham Sharman's insightful and thought-provoking writing is aided by the clever-minded and creative direction of co-director Dan Gauthier; the brilliant production of Michael Pickering; the intense photography of Don Hamilton; the ingenious editing of Clint Jansen; the bold sound design of Chris White; the spirited costume design of Shelley Stickelmeyer; and the illumined make-up motif by Lorna St. John."

SpIFF recommendations from Spokane7 “Movies and More" written by Dan Webster
“The Art of Getting Over It”: This 24-minute short, which screens with “Fix,” is a hometown production. Directed by Dan Gauthier, co-written by Trevor St. John and Graham Sharman and shot by Don Hamilton, it stars St. John as a man involved in a messy divorce who is having trouble resolving his rage over being treated shabbily by his soon-to-be ex. It’s professionally done in every way, and St. John certainly captures the complicated emotions of a man who, for a variety of reasons, feels wronged."
